The History of Castle Rock Water Conservation
The Town of Castle Rock was incorporated in 1881. It is rich in local history, beautiful scenery, access to many amenities, and a small-town atmosphere people have grown to love. Castle Rock is located in Colorado’s high-plains, semi-arid environment. The Town averages only 8 to 15 inches of precipitation a year. Because of this, every drop counts — whether it’s pumped fresh from a well and delivered to your home, or saved through reduced indoor and outdoor water use.
In the past, wise water usage was something everyone could do. For our future, it’s something that everyone must do. No matter where you live, water conservation is something every resident needs to understand and work toward at home or at work. It’s simple. It’s smart. The small, everyday decisions you make can add up to enormous water savings and allow our community to maintain its economic strength and quality of life.
Watering restrictions and consumer demand management
The Town has been on water restrictions since 1985. These restrictions are not so much a water savings program as a demand management tool that helps stagger peak water usage over several days. Castle Rock’s every-third-day/specific hours watering program begins every year on June 1st and continues through August. Learn to be water wise. On every page of this website, you will see the current watering restriction calendar for specific start and end dates for this year. By staggering water use, together we can spread out the demand on the system. If we all watered our lawns at the same time, the system could not deliver enough water for that purpose or any other – including fighting a fire at your home.
The Town has a small, nonrenewable, groundwater-based system that has been in the modern water business about 30 years. We have no access to a river, lake or reservoir for our water supply. We have 50-plus deep groundwater wells, some up to 2,000 feet deep. These wells require a great deal of electricity just to pump water to the surface.
Understand Castle Rock Water. It’s our business to secure your water for the future, drop by drop.
